For others it was part of their military uniform
Above is John Crawford my grandad who was born in Glasgow, Scotland and at the time this photo was taken he was living in Montreal, Canada and fought in WWI for the Canadian Blackwatch as a drummer and a sniper
Below is Mr. B's father James Boole Baird who was born in Porterville, California and fought in WWII as a bomber pilot Captain
There were also very fancy hats in fraternal organizations like
the Freemason's organization
