Rhoda Neel Potts

When Rhoda was born in Red Bluff, California in 1865 her
father JD Potts was 47 and a gold miner from New York.  Her mother was Margaret "Maggie" Neel was 29 from Pennsylvania. At the age of  5 Rhoda was living with her family in the town of Millville which is east of Redding, California. By the 1880 Census Rhoda is 15 and living in Red Bluff with her parents.  At the age of 21 her father had died and she and her mother were living alone. In 1885 she met George "Frank" Arthur Boole in Red Bluff when he was working as a bookkeeper from San Francisco.  They married in 1889 when she was 24 and they had one child together a daughter named Margaret. Frank became a manager for several lumber companies and moved his family to several places in Central California, including his widowed mother-in-law Maggie. One such place was the Converse Basin in Sequoia National Park where Frank was the manager for the Sanger Lumber Company.  While living there Rhoda would trade kitchen utensils and household supplies with the local Yokut Indians in exchange for their beautifully woven baskets.  The name Yokut means "people" and they were peaceful and friendly. At the age of 52 both her mother and husband pass away leaving Rhoda to move in with her daughter and her family in Ducor, California. Rhoda died on April 29, 1930 in Stockton, California.  She is buried in Oakland, California.

Here are some of the beautiful Yokut baskets that Rhoda collected.....
