Mary Anne married Charles Gore on 6 May 1845 in the Chapel of Williton, Williton, Somerset, according to the rites of the established church. The chapel is now named St. Peter's Church

Mary Ann was living in Vellow Village with her three sons
A year later Mary Anne marries James Bryant on 14 Mar 1852. He was recently widowed and living with his parents and siblings in the 1851 Census in Vellow Village.
He is buried in the parish of St. Decumans on 21 Oct 1860
Mary Anne then marries her brother-in-law, James Milton in 1861. He was the widower of her late sister Sarah Bacon. During this time it was illegal to marry your late wife’s sister according to a doctrine that prohibited such marriages (the church saw this as a type of incest similar to marrying your sibling). By 1907 there was an act of Parliament allowing a man to marry his dead wife’s sister named The Deceased Wife’s Sister’s Marriage Act 1907.

Note that they are living at “Foundry Square with Payne” On their marriage church record below it shows they are both living on Tancred Street where there was a foundry – Cox Brass & Iron Foundry. This must be the Foundry Square written on their Marriage Banns record.

They were married on 16th Feb 1861 at St. James Church in Taunton and notice who signed “In the Presence of us,” – John and Mary Ann Payne. We do have some Payne’s on our family tree but I can’t quite make the connection at this time. Were James and Mary Anne Milton in Taunton to possibly go unnoticed and avoid the Deceased Wife’s Law or for James to work in the foundry? How are the Payne’s connected to this couple?

The 1871 Census has James & Mary Ann still living on High Street in Williton. James is an agriculture laborer. Mary Ann’s son Henry Gore is living with them. He is 22 years old, unmarried and a Blacksmith. They also have 3 lodgers – George Poole 50, William Mogridge 70 and Henry Bryant 19. I wonder if the last one is a relative of Marry Ann’s second husband James Bryant? I’ll leave that for another day!

James Milton died in 1875 and was buried on 18 Aug 1875 at St. Decumans. He was 66 years old.
1881 Census - Mary Ann is 63 and still living on High Street in Williton. She has an unmarried lodger living with her and he is 27 years old. His occupation is general laborer.
Mary Anne was buried on October 12, 1884 in Williton, Somerset, aged 66 years. Her surviving children were her three sons, George, John Charles and Henry Gore.
George Gore was baptized on 26 Apr 1846 in Stogumber. He married Sarah Anne Tuckfield on 23 Nov 1875 in East Quantoxhead, Somerset. Somewhere between 1884-1889 the family moved to Burghfield, Berkshire, England. The couple had 5 children together. His occupation was “yard & cattle man”. George died in 1906 at the age of 60 and Sarah in 1946 at the age of 93.
John Charles Gore was baptized on 24 Oct 1847 in Stogumber. He married Mary Chidgey on 10 Oct 1872 in Monksilver, Somerset. He was an agriculture laborer as a young boy and a railroad station master in 1886 where he was caught stealing and sentenced to 6 months of hard labor. In 1911 he was a “Warehouse Packer” at a clock factory and living in Bristol. John & Mary had 4 children and 1 adopted child. John was buried on 27 Feb 1917 at the age of 69 and Mary died in 1938 at the age of 91.
Henry Gore was my Great-grandfather. He was born on 11 Feb 1849 in Stogumber and baptized on 4 Mar 1849. He married Sarah Routley Tuckfield on 1 Jun 1875 in Wiveliscombe, Somerset. He worked for the Railroad all of his life and died on 14 Feb 1898 at the age of 49. Henry was buried in St. Andrew’s Churchyard in Wiveliscombe. You can read more about Henry & Sarah’s life HERE.
